The Bible says several interesting things about an adulterous woman. We shall look at various accounts in both the Old and New Testaments in order to understand more about this topic.
Our first story comes from the book of Leviticus 5:11–29, found in the Old Testament. This is an account of how an unfaithful wife was supposed to be treated if suspected of having cheated on her husband. Let us read together:
“And the LORD spoke to Moses, Saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: If any man’s wife goes astray and behaves unfaithfully toward him, and a man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and it is concealed that she has defiled herself, and there was no witness against her, now was she caught—if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he becomes jealous of his wife, who has defiled herself; or if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he becomes jealous of his wife, although she has not defiled herself, then the man shall bring his wife to the priest. He shall bring the offering required for her, one-tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering of jealousy, an offering for remembering, for bringing iniquity to remembrance.
And the priest shall bring her near and set her before the LORD. The priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, uncover the woman’s head, and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse. And the priest shall put her under oath, and say to the woman, “If no man has lain with you, and if you have not gone astray to uncleanness while under your husband’s authority, be free from this bitter water that brings a curse. But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority, and if you have defiled yourself and some man other than your husband has lain with you, then the priest shall put the woman under the oath of the curse, and he shall say to the woman, The LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh rot and your belly swell; and may this water that causes the curse go into your stomach and make your belly swell and your thigh rot.
Then the woman shall say, “Amen, so be it.”
Then the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall scrape them off into the bitter water. And he shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter her to become bitter. Then the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman’s hand, wave the offering before the LORD, and bring it to the altar; and the priest shall take a handful of the offering, as its memorial portion, burn it on the altar, and afterward make the woman drink the water. When he has made her drink the water, then it shall be, if she has defiled herself and behaved unfaithfully toward her husband, that the water that brings a curse will enter her and become bitter, and her belly will swell, her thigh will rot, and the woman will become a curse among her people. But if the woman has not defiled herself, and is clean, then she shall be free and may conceive children.”
The book of Proverbs also gives us some accounts of an adulterous woman and exhorts us against being enticed by her seductive ways.
In Proverbs 5:3, we learn more about an adulterous woman. In this scripture, the author advises the readers concerning the perils of adultery. This is what the scripture says
“My son, pay attention to my wisdom; lend your ear to my understanding, that you may preserve discretion and your lips may keep knowledge. The lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood and sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lay hold of hell. Lest you ponder her path of life, her ways are unstable; you do not know them. Therefore, hear me now, my children, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. Remove your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, lest you give your honor to others and your years to the cruel one; lest aliens be filled with your wealth, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner; and you mourn at last, when your flesh and your body are consumed, and say: “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised correction! I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!””
This scripture paints a very good picture of a seductress, including her ability to seduce gullible men into her snare using enticing words and her body. The scripture goes on to warn us against having an affair with such a woman because the end result is death and destruction. When that happens, all that you have labored for is taken up by aliens and foreigners.
In Proverbs 7:1–27, the author warns the reader of the dangers of pursuing an adulterous woman. This is what it says:
“For at the window of my house I looked through my lattice and saw among the simple, I perceived among the youths, a young man devoid of understanding, passing along the street near her corner; and I took the path to her house in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night. And there a woman met him, with the attire of a harlot and a crafty heart. She was loud and rebellious; her feet would not stay at home. At times she was outside, at times in the open square, lurking at every corner. So she caught him and kissed him; with an impudent face, she said to him, “I have peace offerings with me; today I have paid my vows. So I came out to meet you, diligently seeking your face, and I have found you. I have covered my bed with tapestries and colored coverings of Egyptian linen. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloe, and cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; let us delight ourselves with love. For my husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey; he has taken a bag of money with him, and he will come home on the appointed day.” With her enticing speech, she caused him to yield, and with her flattering lips, she seduced him. Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter or as a fool goes to the correction of the stocks, until an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He does not know it will cost his life. Now therefore, listen to me, my children, and pay attention to the words of my mouth: Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths; for she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men; her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death.”
Despite the promise of pleasure one gets from such a woman, the author of this passage tells us that she has cast many men into hell and the chambers of death.
Conclusion
In this article, we have looked at what the Bible says about the adulterous woman and the implications of falling into her snare. Consequently, the scripture warns us to keep off her way lest we die and lose everything we labored for.
