Do not worry about tomorrow Bible verse meaning | Matthew 6:34

Do not worry about tomorrow

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34)

“Do not worry about tomorrow” is a verse that teaches us to totally surrender our lives to God and let Him have His way in us.

Actually, these words constitute the very last verse of Matthew chapter six. The context of this verse begins from Matthew 6:25 onwards. In this passage, Christ Jesus was instructing his disciples not to worry themselves about earthly things such as food, clothing, and others.

He gives them the example of how God takes care of the birds of the air and the grass of the field. Jesus’ point being, if God can take care of the birds and the grass, He will definitely take good care of His people (Matthew 6:25-30).

Most importantly, Christ teaches them that there is more to life than just eating, drinking, and clothing (Matthew 6:25). And that is seeking after the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

In these modern times, men are more concerned with earthly things than they are with godliness. Most people’s time is spent in the pursuit of careers, jobs, and business deals, among other worldly things. This happens at the expense of the pursuit of the things of God and eternity. As a result, many people end up sacrificing their eternity at the altar of earthly things. In other words, many people end up losing eternal salvation because of the many compromises they have to make in order to secure earthly possessions.

Christ warned his disciples that it is better for a man to lose his earthly possessions but secure eternal salvation than to gain the whole world but lose his soul (Matthew  16:26; Mark 8:36; Luke 9:25).

How to overcome anxiety and worry

In Philippians 4:6-7, the apostle Paul gives us a number of ways on how to overcome anxiety. The scripture says:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

You can overcome anxiety and worry through prayer and supplication.

Through prayer, one is able to empty his or her worries to God. By so doing, one becomes confident that God has heard the prayers and the answers are on the way.

You can overcome anxiety and worry through thanksgiving.

There are so many things that God has accomplished in your life that may go unnoticed. However, if you sit down and count them, you will discover that God has been more than faithful to you. Thus you will be encouraged that if He delivered you in the past, He will do it again. So learn to be grateful all the time for all the things that God has seen you through in the past. By so doing, anxiety and worry will be kept at bay.

You can overcome anxiety and worry by being still.

The Bible teaches us to be still and wait for the salvation of God. When we become still, God moves in our lives in mighty ways that we never even imagined. This is recorded in Psalms 46:10, which says

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

So God wants you to be still in the midst of your challenges to allow Him the opportunity to come through for you. And then people shall witness how God has delivered you from the difficulties you were facing, and they will exalt His name.

Do not worry about tomorrow.

The apostle James warns us against being too worried and consumed about tomorrow because it is not in our hands. He warns those who keep on planning on what they will do ‘tomorrow’ and do not involve God in those plans. He further cautions them that life is but a vapor that can diffuse away without warning! (James 4:13-16).

Therefore, as believers, we should always remember that God has got good thoughts for us. He harbors thoughts to prosper us and to give us a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Thus, we should never worry even when nothing seems to be working for us. We must keep up the hope and wait for His salvation. For He will always come through for us. He will always make a way where there seems to be none (Isaiah 43:19).

So are you a student? Stop worrying about where your school fees will come from, for God has right now secured you a scholarship to complete your entire education!  Have you completed college studies? Stop being worried about whether or not you will secure a job, for God has already secured a placement for you in the organization of your dreams! Are you looking for someone to marry you? Stop being worried about it, for God has already provided a suitable helper for you! Are you married but have no kids? Worry no more, for God has just opened your womb; go and conceive that baby in the name of Jesus Christ! Are you in debt and do not know where the money to pay up your creditors will come from? God has already sent someone to clear off that debt and restore all the money you lost in shady business deals; receive it in Jesus Christ name! Have you been diagnosed with a terminal sickness? God’s healing power is sweeping through your entire body right now from head to toe; receive it in Christ Jesus name! It is done!

Remember, in this season, God has promised to console all those who mourn, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3). Receive it in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ!

I hope this is helpful. Shalom.

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To him who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and has made us kings and priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.’ (Revelation 1:4-6)
